IMPORTANT MESSAGE -  ENGLISH AND ITALIAN

DEATH PENALTY FOR LOVING MUSIC

The members of the National Music Committee of Somalia face the death

penalty for their past activities in promoting music in the African

country. According to its President, Yusuf Jimale, the Islamic Courts

Union, now controlling most of the country's south, produced a 'Fatwa'

on October 17 calling for the arrest of all its members. Especially

targeted are the top eight officials.

Most have fled the country although one is still unaccounted for.

Their families remain behind. Mr Jimale, now in Nairobi, Kenya, hopes

the families are safe for the moment, but wants to bring them out as

soon as possible.

The Fatwa came after a raid on East African Radio in North Mogadishu,

a station that used to broadcast music to the capital city and its surroundings.

It was later closed down and can no longer operate.

The offices of the National Music Committee already were destroyed

last March. Lost were hard earned equipment and records, including

research documents being prepared for the International Music Council

on the subject of musical diversity and cultural rights. The Islamists

banned their activities and they were not allowed to conduct business

anywhere in Somalia.

This is a sad day for Music.

         CONDANNA A MORTE PER L'AMORE DELLA MUSICA

I membri della Commissione Nazionale per la Musica in Somalia sono

stati condannati a morte per le loro attività promozionali a favore

della musica in quel paese.  Secondo il presidente della Commissione,

Jusuf Jimale, la Corte Islamica che ha il controllo della regione

meridionale della Somalia, ha pronunciato una "fatwa"nella giornata

del 17 ottobre che chiedeva l'arresto di tutti i membri della

Commissione, soprattutto gli ufficiali (musicisti, musicologi,

insegnanti), uomini e donne.

Molti sono riusciti a mettersi in salva anche se ancora non ci sono

notizie per uno dei musicisti. Dr Jimale, ora a Nairobi in Kenia, si

augura che le loro famiglie saranno al sicuro ma teme che dovranno

lasciare il paese al più presto possibile.

La Fatwaè stata pronunciata dopo la distruzione dalle forze islamiche

dell'East African Radio di Mogadishu, stazione radio famosa per i

programmi musicali.   Non è più operante.

Gli uffici della Commissione per la Musica sono stati distrutti in

marzo quest'anno e sono andati distrutti archivi, musica e materiali

per una ricerca che riguarda la diversità culturale ed i diritti

culturali in preparazione per il Consiglio Internazionale per la

Musica dell'UNESCO.  Le attività della Commissione sono stati

"banditi" dalle forze islamiche.

E' una giornata molto triste per la musica
